(Press Release) Pelham Art Center will host an enriching cultural celebration of the Lunar New Year on Sunday, February 8, 2026 from 1-3pm as part of its annual Folk Arts Series. This is the second of three such special events in the series. This energetic afternoon will showcase a traditional Chinese art workshop with seasoned artist Lida Yang Zimmerman, as well as a stunning program of dance performances by Li Garden Dance Company. Visitors will also be encouraged to share their wishes for the year on a community branch. A limited number of red envelopes with a surprise treat inside will be given away, as well. The event is free and open to the public of all ages, with no registration required.

Lunar New Year is celebrated by billions of people worldwide. This year’s Lunar New Year is symbolized by the Fire Horse. Although this holiday is sometimes called Chinese New Year in the West, China is not the only country that observes it. Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is the most celebrated and longest of all Asian festivals and is observed by millions worldwide. As with many winter solstice celebrations, the symbolic darkness of night is banished by the light of fireworks, lanterns, and candles. Man-made paper lanterns are hung by the hundreds in public areas, bringing good luck to the new year.

This year’s special event at the Pelham Art Center will feature the following:

  • 1-3 PM: Chinese Art Workshop with artist Lida Yang Zimmerman (Studio 1) – an ongoing drop-in workshop involving kid-friendly paper cutting techniques. Come create your own horse in accordance with the Year of the Horse – along with fish and paper lanterns for younger children! Visitors are welcome to come and go to this workshop throughout the event.
  • 1:30-2:30 PM: Performance by Li Garden Dance Company (Main Gallery) – a dazzling dragon dance, sword dance, storytelling, and other graceful dance pieces, along with an informational segment and interactive component where children in the audience will be invited to try out dragon dancing!

Come join the community in celebrating this special occasion. Bring your friends and family, and don’t miss the fun!
